PAY
CURRENT fairwork PAY RATES
Our employers normally pay according the award wage structure.
This is at least the minimum wage for your age and the type of work you are doing.
We take our guide for pay rates from the Pastoral Award - Farmhand Level 1 wage structure.

Pay and working conditions are governed by Fairwork here in Australia. Pay and conditions in on their website which you can access using the link opposite.
(Look for the Pastoral Award 2010 Pay guide - 2nd in the list under P.)

Pay example
For example the entry level wage is typically approximately $700 (based on a full time 38 hour week) per week before tax and before any deductions for food and accommodation. This equates to a little under $500 per week after deductions.

This means that it is quite realistic to save $6-8,000 dollars in 4 months of work.

Please note...
19 year old and 18 year old wages are paid at 90% and 80% of the figure above respectively.

There are variations in pay rates between employers and different jobs. Some pay more; some slightly less, depending on other benefits they may provide. Au-pair type roles are subject to different terms and conditions and generally pay less than the rates quoted above.

Skilled, competent, committed and hard workers often get paid very much more because they are greatly valued.

TAX
Tax File Number (TFN)
If you are on the 365 day programme Visitoz will apply for your tax file number for you as soon as you arrive in the country. This is your official number for Australian Government Tax records and you will need to give this to your employer when you start work.

Your TFN will be sent to Visitoz and we will email it to you if it does not arrive before you leave.
Give the number to your employer and store / write down the number.

Tax rates
Tax rates are currently 15% for working holiday makers. The employer will deduct this from your pre-tax pay, plus any deductions for food an accommodation. These tax rates came into effect in January 2017. Prior to this the rate was 32.5%.

At present Working Holiday Visa makers are classed as ‘non resident’ for tax purposes and you may need to tell your employer this. Employers are required to register with the Australian Tax Office in order to be able to employ working holiday visa holders.

However, if you live at the same address for at least 6 months then you are counted as a resident and may be able to claim back some of the tax you have paid. This is a complex area and we recommend that you use a tax reclaim agency for this. (see below.)

Tax records during and after your employment
While in employment your employer should be able to give you payslips that record the pay you are due. We recommend that you scan and keep digital copies of these as well as the paper copies.

When you leave your employment you should ask your employer for a Group Certificate, this records the amount you have earned and the tax deducted.

The employer may only be able to email this to you a few weeks after you leave employment. Keep this document in a safe place as you may need it to reclaim tax when you leave Australia. Also remember to keep all your work related receipts such as bus tickets to your job.

Reclaiming tax you have paid
There are specific rules about reclaiming the tax you pay on your earnings. The rules change often so we recommend that you use the services of a tax reclaim agency.

To reclaim your tax you will need to keep all the payslips that you receive from your employer, and also receipts for things you buy that relate to your work, such as travel to a job and work clothing or equipment.

For further information and details please see the ATO website,

SUPERANNUATION

Super / Superannuation = Pension payments

Superannuation is a payment that an employer is required to make on your behalf to a pension fund. It is normally 9% of your wage.

There are many different companies who provide these funds. Your employer may have a Company which they prefer to use, or you can choose and set up your own.

We choose to work closely with Prime Super because they offer minimal charges.
You can find more information about their policy and application process on their website - please click on the 'Prime Super' button.

You may be able to reclaim this money when you leave Australia. We recommend that you consider using ther services of a tax reclaim agency to help you with this. You will need to keep the contact and account details of the fund that your employer sets up for you so you can contact them when you leave Australia.
PRIME SUPER

MEDICARE

Medicare is a reciprocal Health Service that is provided for you free of charge if you are a Citizen of the UK, Norway, Sweden, Holland or Belgium.

If you are on the 365 day programme Visitoz will apply for this for you when you arrive in the country, and the number and a card with your account details will be posted out to Visitoz. We will forward this to you when we receive it.
