REALITIES
There are certain realities that you need to be prepared for in Australian employment, in general, and in our job search and placement process. We would like you to read this before you join us. You are welcome to ask us questions at any stage.
Our programmes are not 'package holiday tours' with a precise and similar outcome for everybody.
Working in rural Australia is a personal and interactive experience. So a lot of how this goes is up to you.
It is important to be realistic from the outset; this page is intended to give some advice and guidance about that.
We will do everything that we can to prepare and advise you for a fulfilling and worthwhile experience. And you will also need to be prepared to give this new opportunity hundred percent of your application, energy and enthusiasm.
We will expect this from you.

A FEW MORE CERTAINTIES
FEAR NOT
Don’t be afraid of this. After more than 30 years helping more than 35,000 young people experience Australian Working Adventures we know that all types from all walks of life can succeed here.
(ADAPT. Your ability to adapt is the ultimate practical skill. You will need it and use it in every change you make in your life and career. So now is a good time to get some practice.)
(ATTITUDE. Your attitude is critical. Every employer in our network values positive attitude more than any other attribute.)
AND NOW
Now our task is to show you how to turn your positive attitude into effective and useful actions for your employer in an Aussie Farm job. It will be fun. We are really looking forward to meeting you.

KEY POINTS
- This is potentially the start of an exciting and adventurous progression for you.
- Success here is dictated mostly by how you engage and interact with the opportunities Australia provides you.
- The more flexible you are in your mind about the jobs you are willing to do, the better it will be for you.
- Employers will normally be looking for 4 or more months commitment.
- Jobs and opportunities offered will be different for each person, and are essentially unique to you.
SHORT TERM JOB MARKET - LOW TO MEDIUM SKILL - PRACTICAL HANDS ON WORK
- You are entering the short to medium term job market in rural Australia.
- In general you will be entering this job market as a low to medium skill worker.
- This is practical work. It requires energy, engagement, enthusiasm, intelligent application, fast and efficient movement on and between tasks, proactive thinking ahead, and initiative. Good communication, helping your colleagues and an ‘always on’ attitude to finding ways to be helpful. (this should start at the training farm, if not before)
JOB OPTIONS FROM OUR EMPLOYER NETWORK
- We expect our network to provide one or more job options that are a realistic fit for your current skills and abilities.
- We will strive to set and achieve realistic job aspirations for you that will allow you to learn, gain skills, experience and also grow personally.
- It is probably unrealistic to expect a 10/10 job. 6/10 based on reasonable expectations is more realistic. And then you can turn a 6/10 job into a 10/10 by how you interact with it !
- The job options available may also depend on many factors that are out of our control, such as season, weather, agricultural market conditions and other things.
- It is likely that there will be fewer options if you have little previous skill or experience.
- It is important to be flexible about the location and exact job types you are willing to do.
DREAM JOB ?
- Do not expect your ‘dream job’; straight off the shelf. We will aim for the most realistic and best fit that we can, but we may need to reality check your expectations. (You are unlikely to become Crocodile Dundee, Hugh Jackman, Mcleods daughters etc next week)
- You will need to be prepared to accept what jobs are available within our network at the times that you need work, and progress from there.
- It is probably unrealistic to expect a 10/10 job. But you can turn a 6/10 job into a 10/10 by how you interact with it !
- Your 1st job here is the hardest one to get. With a positive report & reference from the first, the 2nd one is always easier.
- Consider yourself at the start of a progression that is unique to you.
- For example, as a Aussie farmwork beginner: At the training farm you will be at Level 1.
- During your first job you will rise from Level 1 to Level 3.
- Level 3 is where you start being useful.
- In 2nd and 3rd jobs you may continue to develop to level 4 and level 5.
- For example, as a Aussie farmwork beginner: At the training farm you will be at Level 1.

ENGAGEMENT WITH OUR PATHWAY TO FARMWORK COURSE
- You will be required to engage effectively with our jobs team, the training farm staff and all the training farm activities, and also to demonstrate commonly acceptable workplace behaviours both in and out of work hours. This includes your share of domestic chores, maintaining clean and tidy living spaces etc. This is how we can recommend you to our employer network.
- Based on your performance on the training farm, we can also judge your aptitude and potential to learn tasks and roles quickly. We will report this to potential employers. So your engagement with ALL the training farm activities is very important to increase your job options and employment potential.
- 100% effort is essential, as is willingness to accept and learn Australian ways, even if you know others.

- This is normal and an important part of ‘gap year’ personal development.

A FEW MORE CERTAINTIES

- A chance to learn. Stand on your own. Make your own decisions. Find your own motivation.
